RE_PURPOSE WITH RESKINNED

8 Jun 2022

The future of fashion is circular. We’re here to move the fashion industry in the right direction by keeping clothes out of landfill. We always opt for reuse over recycling, and sometimes reuse looks like repurposing.

If an item is too damaged or stained to be resold, we’ll upcycle it. We are already working with designers like E.L.V. Denim and Ahluwalia to turn the good bits of old clothes into something new, and have more projects planned in the future.

E.L.V Denim

E.L.V. Denim takes stocks of old discarded denim and transforms them into modern, sophisticated and even 'made to measure' jeans. E.L.V. DENIM stands for East London Vintage Denim, as all products are designed and produced in East London. All products are upcycled from unwanted post-consumer waste denim, helping to protect the environment for future generations and ensuring a zero-waste policy. It takes 10,000 litres of water to make a new pair of jeans – this is the same amount of water that one person drinks in 13 years. At E.L.V. DENIM we only use 7 litres to wash the post-consumer denim waste. E.L.V Denim have used Reskinned sourced denim as part of their collections.

Ahluwalia

We collaborated with Ahluwalia last year to provide feedstock for their collection. Priya Ahluwalia launched her eponymous multi award winning label in 2018, after graduating from the MA Menswear course at The University of Westminster. Whilst their practice is heavily sustainability focused, they don't like to be called a “sustainable brand”. In the words of Priya, "We just try to work with materials that are pre-existing, dead stock or vintage, and just try and create really interesting design details and quirks. Sustainability just naturally happened."

Find out more about Ahluwalia in their interview with GQ and view the lookbook.

Fancy upcycling your own?

We advocates of empowering you to make the most of your clothes. Upcycling is a great way to refresh less loved items. To get you started on your journey, we recommend reading Wear, Repair, Repurpose: A Maker's Guide to Mending and Upcycling Clothes by Lily Fulop. The book gives you all the tools to reimagine your wardrobe, make the most of preloved finds and give worn-out cloth new life. There are plenty of video guides on YouTube and TikTok that can give you some inspiration; and we also recommend searching for local sewing classes.
