Sustainable vintage fashion you'll love from Reskinned

Why we’re dipping our toes in the vintage pool

We’ve only just launched our resale platform, so why the move into the vintage market already?

It’s fairly simple, at Reskinned, we receive a large volume of clothes through our warehouse doors. Whilst we’re still working on setting up resale for many of the partnership brands we have lined up (get excited!), we’ve already found ourselves building a collection of high quality vintage that’s good to go.

We are passionate about rehoming clothes and keeping them round for longer because it’s the right thing to do. Recycling only comes as a last resort. We’ve got the stock so why not share it? We’ll be listing vintage in curated drops going forward.

What is vintage clothing?

Vintage means “of age”. When talking about vintage clothing, we generally mean clothes that were made between the 1930s and the 1980s. Retro clothes are clothing made in the 1980s or 1990s, but as we move further down the rabbit-hole of the millennium, those definitions are starting to blur. Especially as the rise in resale tech and gen Z’s love of Y2K (clothes from the early 00s) has meant that there is an increasingly looser definition of the term ‘vintage’, with ‘retro’ being pretty much phased out.

As a side note, ‘antique’ clothing refers to anything over 100 years old. The delicacy of these items often results in higher price points, and these clothes need a lot of tender care. 'Vintage fashion' is more of an umbrella term that can refer to both genuine vintage clothes or modern clothing that has been inspired by vintage patterns and style.

Production of clothing was a lot less than it is now. Back in the day, it was very common for clothes to be handmade, or come from a much smaller stockpool and independent makers. That’s what makes vintage clothing so special: the thrill of the find.

What are the benefits of buying vintage fashion?

Like buying preloved, vintage clothing is a great way to make use of what is already in existence. By keeping clothes in circulation for long periods of time, we can reduce demand for new items, which ultimately means a reduction in water use, energy use, pollution, waste, and all the rest. It also, hopefully, means more brands will be encouraged to put resources into creating higher quality clothes that last longer.

Vintage comes with all the good stuff of preloved, but also gives you an opportunity to discover something original and unique. The vintage clothes we've selected actually reflect designs that have inspired today’s fashion trends.

I’ve never been into vintage styles. Will there be something for me?

By now, we’re all pretty used to the concept of “preloved” but for some of us, the idea of ‘vintage’ might come with some hesitation. Will it smell? Can I find something that is my style? Won't it look old?

You don’t have to go full on Twiggy or Elvis. Vintage is something that can be enjoyed by all. From high quality knits that have stood the test of time, to more speciality items like jumpsuits from the 60s. Expect the Reskinned drop to include some lovingly selected timeless staples like blouses and jumpers, mixed in with some characterful classic vintage items.

As always, we can guarantee quality and cleanliness. All clothes will have gone through the same process we put our preloved clothes through. That means they’ve been sorted by hand, hand selected, repaired where needed. All stains and smells (if any) are removed through our OZONE cleansing process.

We feel confident that there’s something for everyone.

How do I look after my vintage clothes?

As always, we recommend avoiding washing clothes unless they really need it. Looking after your vintage items is fairly similar to how you would care for your usual wardrobe, but many of these items have stood the test of time so may need a little bit more of a delicate hand. Check the care label for instructions on how to wash your clothes. Some vintage items are unlabelled. Here is some basic guidance on how to care for your vintage:

  1. Steam in between wears and avoid the washing machine
  2. Spot wash any marks
  3. If it needs a wash, opt for handwashing or wash on colder, gentle cycles
  4. Air dry, don’t tumble dry
  5. Store with moth protection
  6. If in doubt, find a eco friendly dry cleaner for speciality items
