How does takeback programme work? - Reskinned

Takeback is a relatively new term but it’s growing in popularity. ‘Takeback’ is when a brand or business provides an opportunity for customers to return old clothes they no longer wear, in exchange for some sort of reward. This reward is usually in the form of a discount code that can be redeemed against new orders at the same brand. To run a takeback programme, brands need to manage and sort all the clothes that are returned.. Reskinned acts as the middle man for this takeback programme management., It’s our job to sort, rehome or recycle everything that comes through our door and requires many people doing lots of different tasks, all by hand. It’s hard work, but it’s honest work. You get the idea. Send your clothes to us, and then we do the rest… but how does it all work?

Takeback Step 1: Tell us what you’re sending

If you have clothes to send in, follow the easy steps on the brand’s take back page to register the items you’re sending back. Don’t worry, we just need general information rather than specifics. Think “jumper” rather than “AW21 Floral Wool Pullover”.

Takeback Step 2: Send in your clothes

Send us your clothes using any packaging you have at home. If it can get to us in one piece, then you’re good to go. Ideally we want you to reuse anything you can find at home. Your usual postage packages are all good, but we’re also happy to accept items returned in reused packages or anything else you have at home. A top sent in a cardboard teabag box was a pretty original takeback to receive. Please ensure that you secure your parcel carefully. If it needs a bit of extra tape then don’t hold back. Reuse is what we’re all about.

Takeback Step 3: We sort your clothes

Your items will arrive at our warehouse where they are sorted by hand. We grade items into different categories depending on their quality and condition. At this stage, you will be sent your reward via email. It doesn’t matter what condition your clothes are in, we’re happy to reward you for doing the right thing. Anything that we can’t resell is categorised and then passed on to LMB Textiles (our sister business) who have been recycling clothes for over 20 years. LMB then does an even deeper sort of clothing and will find a new use for items, or responsibly recycle them.

Takeback Step 4: Ozone Cleansing

Items that are destined for resale on Reskinned are Ozone-Cleansed. This is a fancy name for a special type of sustainable cleaning process we have installed at the warehouse. It uses a lot less chemicals than traditional cleaning methods, but removes bacteria and odours just as efficiently.

Takeback Step 5:Repairs

We have an in-house repairs team who can make those necessary repairs to items that need it. This may mean darning holes, fixing a zip or changing buttons. We also specify on an item listing whether or not it’s been repaired. We’re big fans of visible mending because we are all about breathing life into old pieces, but generally we try to keep the repairs as subtle as possible.

Takeback Step 6: Photography & Listing

When items are good to sell, our warehouse team photographs every item using our photography suite. We’ve invested in a decent bit of kit to make sure everything on our site is accurately represented, making it easy for you to shop. That same team works with our Brand Managers to list items on our website for drops. We curate items depending on seasons and themes (eg. vintage), to make it easier for you to browse.

Takeback Step 7: Rehoming your less loved clothes

We regularly drop new items on our website, in collaboration with our partner brands. We’ve already seen how popular resale can be with brand loyal people who are looking for cheaper - but just as good quality - clothes from their favourite stores. Once purchased, our warehouse team will package and send out those items to their new home. All customers have the opportunity to return items (within 30 days) if they don’t quite work out. Then the warehouse team checks them over again, and if the garment is all ok, we list it again to make sure it finds the right home.

There you have it. That’s the long and the short of it. Let us know if you have any questions about how takeback works, or whether you want to enquire about offering takeback to your customers.
