Got a pair of trousers that don’t quite fit anymore and a belt just isn’t cutting it? Well, the good news is you don’t need to stress about buying a new pair or even heading to the tailor. Here’s how to fix it yourself, in just a few simple, satisfying steps. All you need is a bit of patience and a needle and thread.
Try your trousers on, and make note of how many inches you need to take in. Remember: if you’re changing two seam points (say either side of the waistband), halve the total adjustment so everything stays balanced. So let’s say your current waistband measures 19 inches across and you need to take 2 inches off, you’ll be taking 1 inch from either side.
On the outside of the waistband draw a triangle using your chalk — the base represents how much you’re taking out, and the point sits just below the waistband stitching line.
Top Tip: If there are darts in your waistband, try to align the point of the triangle with the dart to create a seamless finish.
Load your needle with a doubled-up length of strong thread. Knot the end securely. Begin at one top corner of the triangle by anchoring on the underside of the waistband.
Bring your needle up at one corner, then down at the opposite corner of the triangle. Next, come back up about 3mm lower along the chalk line—only catch the waistband’s top layer, not the inside fabric. Continue weaving horizontally across the triangle’s lines until you reach the pointed tip.
Now comes the satisfying part - tighten the stitches gently by pulling the tail of the thread so the edges pull together evenly and invisibly. If you notice your thread snaps when pulling, restitch the lines of the triangle using a stronger thread.
Thread the needle through to the back and tie a knot with the thread at the point to secure it in place. Now fold over the extra lip fabric on the inside of the waistband. Press it flat while stitching it down discreetly. Finish with a tidy knot on the inside and snip the excess.
Just like that, your waistband fits like new, and you didn’t have to send the trousers anywhere. By taking matters into your own hands, you’ve given your piece a fresh lease of life—and you’ve helped keep fashion waste out of landfill.
Be proud. You just extended the life of something you love, one careful stitch at a time.
