Finisterre x Reskinned: Introducing the Resurge Collection, A New Chapter for Recycled Denim

Finisterre’s Resurge Collection is a project we’re very excited to be involved in, because it puts into practice something we talk about a lot: the circular materials lifecycle. Tell you more? Okay, we will.

Created in collaboration with Finisterre and recycling experts Dagobaire, this project takes a material most of us already have plenty of, and gives it another life.

Denim, which is worn and often forgotten, is brought back into circulation as something new, without losing the durability that made it worth wearing in the first place.

Circular fashion gets talked about a lot, but actually making it work is another story entirely, which relies on having the right systems in place. For this project, that means being able to collect enough old denim, process it properly, and turn it back into something you’d actually want to wear again.

The result is the Resurge Collection: thoughtful and beautiful pieces for men and women, inspired by classic French workwear and designed for everyday life. Simple, functional silhouettes that earn their place in your wardrobe and stay there. And if they don’t, that’s fine too. They’ll find their way back into the cycle and become something new again. Possibly something your great great grandkids end up wearing somewhere down the line.

We thought you might want to see how it all comes together, so here’s a look from start to finish.

Turning old denim into something worth wearing again

“We’ve been working with Finisterre for some time now, so it’s great to see them using this recycled material in the Resurge collection. It shows how discarded garments can be transformed into new textile fibres and brought back into everyday clothing.”Ross Barry, Co-Founder of Reskinned.

Fashion has a serious volume problem.

There’s more clothing than ever before. More returns, more unworn pieces, more garments reaching the end of their life with no clear next step. At the same time, raw materials are becoming more expensive and less predictable, and expectations around what brands should do about it are shifting fast.

This is where Finisterre have always stood out.

Circularity isn’t something they’ve tacked onto the business as an afterthought, it’s built into how they operate. They were our very first brand partner back in 2021, and since then have consistently invested in takeback, repair, and material innovation. We’ve even worked together on projects like their Revive collection, turning old Finisterre wool jumpers into new ones.

And they wouldn’t be able to do this without their amazing customers. They’re some of the strongest takebackers we see, returning their well-worn, well-loved and patched up garments so they can be repaired, resold, or recycled properly, instead of ending up in landfill.

With a foundation like theirs in place, more ambitious projects like this become possible, and circularity starts to look a lot more real.

Introducing the Resurge Collection

The Resurge Collection is a small capsule of just two core styles, designed for both men and women. A chore jacket and a pair of work trousers, sewn from recycled denim and inspired by classic French workwear.

The simplicity of the designs is intentional. The boxy fits, functional details, clean lines make them the kind of pieces that slip easily into your wardrobe and get better with wear, rather than feeling out of place when inevitably trends move on.

They’re made to be worn often, across all sorts of different moments in your day, not just saved for a specific occasion.

Let us present to you:

The Resurge Denim Chore Jacket

A timeless workwear staple. The womenswear style is based off of the bestselling Yarrel Chore Jacket, but with an updated fit (shorter and boxier). And for the guys, a take on the bestselling Basset Jacket, a classic piece, updated with the soft grey-blue of recycled denim.

The Resurge Denim Trouser

Relaxed, comfy trousers for every occasion. For women, it’s the well-loved Studio Cord trousers reimagined in recycled denim, and for men, the Basset trouser sees a new form.

It’s all about the fabrics

At the centre of the Resurge Collection is the material itself. The designs are simple - well-loved styles that have been tried and tested, so we know they work. The material is where the innovation is.

The fabric is made from a mix of recycled inputs which all bring something unique to the table:

  • 30% post-consumer recycled cotton, sourced from old denim
  • 30% pre-consumer recycled cotton, taken from production waste
  • 40% recycled polyester, added to increase strength and durability

Post-consumer cotton is where we come in: it’s the denim that’s already been worn and passed on, completing its usable life. Through our takeback and sorting systems we collect the jeans before they get lost as “waste,” and prepare all of the denim so it can be used all over again for something new.

Dagobaire then work their magic, deconstructing the fabric, along with production waste (all the scraps from the sewing process) and recycled polyester.

Bringing these fibres together is what makes the fabric work so well. Recycled cotton can have shorter fibres, which affects its strength, so blending it with pre-consumer cotton and recycled polyester helps bring back the durability you need for everyday wear.

The end result is a fabric that feels solid, wears well, and makes sense for everyday wear. And because the process is consistent, it’s something that can keep happening, not just once, but over and over again as more material comes through the takeback programme.

How Old Denim Becomes New Fabric

Turning old garments into something you’d actually wear again requires a system that holds together from start to finish. Every stage relies on the previous one to work, and if one part stops working, none of it can work.

Step 1: Garments are collected through Reskinned’s takeback systems
It starts with old denim coming back to us. These are pieces that have been worn, lived in, and reached the end of their first life, returned so we can figure out what should happen next.

Step 2: The denim is sorted and graded
Once collected, everything is sorted. The best pieces are set aside for resale or repair. The rest are assessed and separated out for recycling, based on what they’re made from and whether they’re suitable to be turned back into fibre.

Step 3: Feedstock is prepared for recycling
The denim selected for recycling is then grouped and prepared into a consistent feedstock. It’s a bit like getting all the ingredients ready before you start cooking, it needs to be right before it moves on.

Step 4: The fibre is recycled with Dagobaire
That feedstock is sent to our recycling partner Dagobaire, where the garments are broken down and turned back into fibre.

Step 5: Yarn and fabric are developed
The recycled fibre is blended and spun into yarn, and developed into fabric that can hold up to wear. This is where it shifts from raw material back into something you can use.

Step 6: Finisterre develops the final collection
Finisterre takes that fabric and turns it into the pieces in the Resurge Collection, which you can buy, and love and wear for as long as you want, and then pass back onto us through the takeback programme, where we’ll find it a new home, or if it’s at the end of its life, we’ll go through this cycle all over again, making something new.

Each step is pretty straightforward on its own, but getting them all to line up can be a bit of a challenge, and that’s what makes it a process that should be celebrated when brands get it right. (Pause for applause).

So, where is all this heading?

This is the future of fashion.

More and more brands are moving towards fibre-to-fibre recycling, and taking responsibility for the clothes they’ve created at the end of their lifecycle. We’re no longer accepting a shrug and a “not my problem,” and asking our favourite brands to take inspiration from the leaders like Finisterre, in challenging how things are done, and bringing new ideas to life.

Choose pieces that do more than just sit in your wardrobe.
